The posts in this archive are written to help Shopify teams identify what is weakening buying momentum, what is suppressing AOV, and what deserves action first.

Disclosure: Agentmatica, one of the agents below, is made by Thought Bulb, the studio behind HiveSense. We've marked it. Prices and ratings for every product come from its own pricing page or Shopify App Store listing as checked on October 21, 2026. Resolution rates quoted by vendors are labeled as vendor claims.

AI chatbots and agents for Shopify split roughly into two jobs. (This guide uses "chatbot" and "agent" for the same kind of tool.) Support agents answer "where is my order," handle returns, and cut ticket volume. Sales agents answer product questions, recommend items, and build carts. Most tools now do some of both, but their pricing and design show which job they were built for.

What Shopify built itself

Shopify Inbox is free and rated 4.6 from 5,805 reviews on the App Store. Its listing describes an "AI sales associate" that answers questions from your catalog, policies, and storefront content, and personalizes replies for shoppers signed in with Shop. Shopify's help center says the Inbox agent is opt-in and covers products, shipping, returns, sizing, and policies. It doesn't say whether the agent can look up order status, so check that before relying on it for support.

Shopify has also changed how outside agents connect to stores. In January 2026, it announced the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google, along with Agentic Storefronts for selling through AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Copilot, with native selling on Google's AI surfaces described as rolling out. Shopify's developer docs say the catalog and cart tools in Storefront MCP have moved to UCP endpoints. For merchants, this means more shoppers may reach products through AI assistants outside your site, which makes clean product data matter for both your own chat agent and external ones. Our agentic commerce guide covers that.

How much AI support is automated

Salesforce's seventh State of Service report, a survey of 6,500 service professionals in 40 countries, found AI resolved about 30% of cases in 2025, with respondents expecting 50% by 2027. Gorgias's 2026 conversational commerce report, a vendor report, says 96% of the ecommerce professionals it surveyed use AI.

The agents

Agentmatica (ours)

Agentmatica describes itself as "the sales and support agent for DTC and owner-led ecommerce stores." It answers from your site's pages with links to the source page, recommends products, captures leads, and hands conversations to your team, with standing instructions and live takeover for the owner. On Shopify and WooCommerce, it can also show product cards, build carts, send checkout links, and look up orders. It installs with one script tag or a hosted chat page.

Every plan includes every feature. Plans differ by replies, agents, and indexed pages:

PlanPriceReplies a month
Free$0100
Starter$29/mo1,000
Growth$79/mo3,000
Scale$199/mo10,000

Paid plans can switch on overage at $5 per 100 extra replies, capped at the plan's own price. Agentmatica's pricing page notes prices are introductory.

Tidio Lyro

Tidio is rated 4.8 from 1,355 reviews on the App Store. Tidio's first 50 Lyro conversations are free (a lifetime allowance, not monthly), and paid plans start at $24.17 a month billed annually; its Shopify listing shows the cheapest paid plan at $29 a month. Tidio's Lyro page says Lyro can answer order status questions. Tidio says customers "average a 75% resolution rate" (vendor claim). When we checked, Lyro's price on Tidio's website and on its Shopify listing didn't match, so confirm the current price before you buy.

Gorgias AI Agent

Gorgias is a support helpdesk rated 4.3 from 706 reviews. Its AI Agent costs $0.90 per automated interaction on annual contracts or $1.00 monthly, on top of a helpdesk plan starting at $10 a month, and each automated interaction also counts as a helpdesk ticket. It covers email, chat, SMS, voice, social, and TikTok Shop, and the listing includes a shopping assistant alongside order, shipping, and returns handling.

Intercom Fin

Fin is priced at $0.99 per resolution, with a 50-resolution monthly minimum when used outside Intercom's helpdesk. It works across email, chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, and voice. Its Shopify app is rated 3.7 from 18 reviews.

Zendesk AI agents

Zendesk charges $1.50 per automated resolution on committed plans or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and plans include 5 to 10 automated resolutions per agent per month. Its Shopify app is rated 3.2 from 94 reviews and starts at $55 per agent per month. Zendesk claims "up to 80%+" of interactions can be resolved (vendor claim).

Rep AI

Rep AI is sales-first: behavior-triggered chats, product recommendations, and upsells, plus order status, returns, and cancellations. It's rated 4.6 from 119 reviews. Its listing shows pay-as-you-grow pricing at $12 per 1,000 visitors after 100 free, and monthly plans from $104.

Alhena AI

Alhena AI is rated 5.0 from 6 reviews. It covers shopping and support, including voice, and targets fashion, beauty, jewelry, and home brands. It has a free tier with 25 conversations, then plans at $239, $599, and $1,199 a month, with overage at $1.20 per conversation.

Siena AI

Siena charges a $750 monthly platform fee plus $0.90 per automated ticket. Its site quotes Spanx handling 50% of conversations at "90%+ CSAT" (customer claim on vendor site). We couldn't find a Shopify App Store rating.

Yuma AI

Yuma works inside existing helpdesks such as Gorgias, Zendesk, and Kustomer, and takes actions like refunds, cancellations, returns, and subscription changes. Its listing shows $850 a month for small merchants and $1,200 for medium merchants, and it's rated 5.0 from 9 reviews.

Richpanel

Richpanel's helpdesk is $99 per seat a month on annual billing, with AI at about $0.20 per conversation through credits and a $200 monthly minimum. It offers a money-back guarantee if it doesn't automate 50% of tickets in 30 days. We couldn't confirm a Shopify App Store listing.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether the agent's main job is sales or support. Sales agents need product data, recommendations, and cart building. Support agents need order lookup, returns, and a helpdesk handoff.
  2. Work out the real monthly cost. Per-resolution pricing is cheap at low volume and expensive at high volume. Multiply your monthly conversations by the per-resolution price, then add platform fees and seats.
  3. Test it on your own catalog. Ask it about sizing, shipping to your main markets, a product you're out of, and your returns policy. Check whether answers link to the source page.
  4. Check the handoff. When the agent can't help, the shopper should reach a person without repeating themselves.
  5. Check what it says when it doesn't know. An agent that makes up a returns policy creates support tickets instead of preventing them.
  6. Watch speed. Chat widgets load scripts on every page. Check your Core Web Vitals after installing (see Shopify site speed and conversion).

FAQ: AI chat agents for Shopify

What is the best free AI chatbot for Shopify?

Shopify Inbox is free and includes an opt-in AI agent that answers from your catalog, policies, and storefront content. Agentmatica has a free plan with 100 replies a month, Tidio gives your first 50 Lyro conversations free, and Alhena AI has a free tier with 25 conversations.

How much does an AI customer service agent cost for Shopify?

Pricing varies by model. Gorgias charges $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction plus a helpdesk plan, Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per resolution, and Zendesk charges $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution. Flat plans include Agentmatica from $29 a month and Alhena from $239.

Can an AI chatbot track Shopify orders?

Many can. Gorgias, Rep AI, and Agentmatica list order handling or order lookup, and Tidio says Lyro answers order status questions. Shopify's help center doesn't say whether the Inbox agent looks up orders.

Do AI sales agents increase conversion?

Vendors report that they do, but most published figures come from the vendors themselves. Test with your own traffic: compare conversion and AOV for sessions that use the chat against similar sessions that don't, and watch support tickets.

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?

A protocol Shopify announced with Google in January 2026 that lets AI agents work with merchants' catalogs, carts, and checkout. Shopify's developer docs say the catalog and cart tools from Storefront MCP moved to UCP endpoints.

Should I use a helpdesk AI or a standalone sales agent?

If your team already works in a helpdesk such as Gorgias, Zendesk, or Intercom, its AI agent fits that workflow. If you mainly want to answer pre-purchase questions and build carts, a sales-focused agent may fit better and cost less.

Start with the questions shoppers ask

Look at your last 100 chats or support emails before you pick a tool. If most are "where is my order," choose for support. If most are "which size" or "will this work for me," choose for sales. Those pre-purchase questions often point to gaps on the product page itself. A HiveSense audit flags those gaps so the agent isn't covering for missing information.
