Best Shopify Subscription Apps in 2026: 5 Apps Compared, and How Subscriptions Work as a CRO Lever
How subscription apps raise order value and repeat revenue on Shopify through upsells to upcoming orders, prepaid plans, and build-a-box, what the evidence shows, and the five subscription apps worth shortlisting.

Key Signal
18% → 35% subscriptions
The posts in this archive are written to help Shopify teams identify what is weakening buying momentum, what is suppressing AOV, and what deserves action first.
Subscriptions usually come up as a retention tool. They're also a CRO lever, because the subscription app controls several moments where order value can grow: the subscribe option on the product page, the customer portal, the emails before each renewal, and the cancellation flow. Each is a chance to add an item, upgrade a plan, or keep a customer who was about to leave.
This guide covers how that works, what the published evidence shows, and five subscription apps worth shortlisting. We don't make a subscription app, and none of the apps below is ours. Ratings and prices come from each app's Shopify App Store listing as checked on October 21, 2026.
Quick answer
| App | Starting price | Rating (reviews) | Order-value features on its listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appstle Subscriptions | Free up to $500/mo in subscriptions | 5.0 (9,060) | Prepaid plans, build-a-box and bundling, checkout links, add to subscription |
| Loop Subscriptions | Free up to 50 active subscriptions | 5.0 (789) | Custom bundles, portal upsells, one-click email actions, prepaid and gift plans |
| Recharge | $25/mo | 4.8 (3,139) | Upsell and cross-sell tools, subscription-first PDP widget, bundles and tiered discounts |
| Skio | $599/mo + 1% + 20¢ | 5.0 (243) | Build-a-box, AI upsell carousel, one-time upsells to next order |
| Seal Subscriptions | Free up to 50 subscriptions | 4.9 (3,145) | Tiered subscription discounts, product swaps, one-click checkout links |
Shopify's own Shopify Subscriptions app is free and rated 3.7 from 866 reviews. It covers subscribe-and-save, skip, pause, and cancel, but its listing doesn't mention upsells, bundles, or prepaid plans, so it's a baseline rather than an order-value tool.
How a subscription app raises order value
A subscription app can lift order value in five main ways:
- Add-ons to the next order. The customer adds a one-time item to an upcoming delivery from the portal or from an email, with no new checkout. Skio calls these one-time upsells and supports them through the portal and Klaviyo quick actions.
- Prepaid plans. The customer makes a single payment up front for several deliveries, which raises the value of each order. Appstle includes prepaid plans on its free tier, and Loop lists flexible prepaid subscriptions on its Pro plan.
- Build-a-box and bundles. The customer chooses several products into one recurring order. Skio, Appstle (Business plan), Loop, and Recharge (Plus plan) list this.
- Tiered discounts. A larger discount for more items or a longer commitment nudges customers to a bigger subscription. Seal lists tiered subscription discounts on its free plan, and Recharge lists them on Plus.
- Cancellation flows with offers. Instead of cancelling, the customer can skip, swap, or take a discount. This protects repeat revenue rather than first-order value. Recharge, Skio, Loop, Appstle, and Seal all list cancellation flows.
Most of these raise value after the first order. A subscribe option on the product page can lower the first order's value, because the subscription is discounted, as the test below shows.
What the evidence shows
The best public test is an Intelligems case study for Organics Ocean. Over eight weeks, with more than 2,000 orders per variant, it compared defaulting the product page to subscribe-and-save against defaulting to one-time purchase. With subscribe preselected:
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Subscription share of orders | Rose from 18% to 35% |
| First-order conversion | Fell about 7% |
| First-order AOV | Fell about 5% |
| Revenue per visitor | Roughly flat |
| Repeat customer rate | Rose from 44% to 54% |
| Revenue per customer after the first order | Rose 26% |
So the subscription default didn't lift the first order. It lifted what customers spent afterward. That's the right way to think about subscriptions as a CRO lever: judge them on revenue per visitor and on later orders, not on first-order AOV alone. We cover widget design in more detail in Shopify subscription conversion.
Vendor data points the same way, with the usual caveats. Recharge's 2026 Subscription Trend Report, covering 20,000 brands on its platform, says subscribers placed nearly three times as many orders as one-time shoppers. Recharge's cross-sell product page claims a 9% increase in AOV with its cross-sell tools and a 23% increase in subscription sales with its upsell tools, without stating a method, so treat those as marketing figures.
The five apps
Appstle Subscriptions
Appstle has the most reviews of any subscription app we checked, 9,060 at a 5.0 rating. Its pricing caps by monthly subscription revenue: free up to $500 a month, including pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions; Starter at $10 a month up to $5,000, with 0% transaction fees and loyalty features; Business at $30 up to $15,000, adding build-a-box, bundling, and retention tools; and Business Premium at $100 up to $100,000, adding checkout links, quick action emails, and adding items to subscriptions. It's the lowest-cost route to prepaid plans and build-a-box.
Loop Subscriptions
Loop is free up to 50 active subscriptions, then $99 a month plus 1% per transaction (Starter) or $399 plus 0.75% (Pro). Starter lists fixed and build-your-own bundles, one-click checkout links, a branded customer portal with upsells, personalized cancellation flows, and one-click email actions. Pro adds personalized upsell and upgrade profiles, flexible prepaid and gift subscriptions, and subscriber rewards.
Recharge
Recharge starts at $25 a month with no transaction fees for the first 50 subscribers, then Starter at $99 a month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction, and Plus at $499 plus 1.34% + 19¢. Starter lists a subscription-first product page widget, upsell and cross-sell tools, and cancellation prevention. Plus adds customizable bundles, tiered discounts, SMS, and loyalty rewards. Recharge's site also describes cart upsells to subscription, checkout add-ons, prepaid plans, and post-purchase offers.
Skio
Skio, now a Recharge company, is aimed at larger brands. Its listing shows a Scale plan at $599 a month plus 1% + 20¢ per transaction, and its pricing page shows $499 a month billed annually. It lists static and dynamic build-a-box, a multi-step cancel flow builder, passwordless login with quick actions, and on its pricing page an AI-driven upsell carousel and two-way SMS.
Seal Subscriptions
Seal charges no transaction fees on any plan. It's free up to 50 subscriptions, then $5.95, $9.95, and $24.95 a month for 100, 250, and 500 subscriptions. The free plan includes tiered subscription discounts and product swaps, and the $9.95 plan and above add a custom cancellation flow and one-click checkout links. Its listing doesn't mention upsells or bundles, so it's best for smaller stores that want low cost and tiered discounts.
How to choose
- Price it at your size. Platform fees plus a percentage of each transaction add up quickly. Work out the monthly cost at your current subscription revenue and at double it.
- Pick the order-value features you'll use. If you'll run add-ons to the next order, check the portal and email tools. If you sell consumables in sets, check build-a-box.
- Check the cancellation flow. It's where most repeat revenue is saved or lost.
- Check how it handles your other apps. Bundles, free shipping thresholds, and cart links can all interact with subscriptions. Shopify's own Bundles app, for example, isn't compatible with subscriptions, according to Shopify's help center.
- Test the subscribe option on your product page before scaling. Our A/B testing guide covers how much traffic that needs.
FAQ: Shopify subscription apps and AOV
Do subscriptions increase AOV on Shopify?
Not always on the first order. In Intelligems' Organics Ocean test, defaulting to subscribe lowered first-order AOV about 5% but raised revenue per customer after the first order by 26%. Subscription apps raise value mainly through add-ons to later orders, prepaid plans, bundles, and tiered discounts.
What is the best subscription app for Shopify?
It depends on size and needs. Appstle and Seal have free plans and low fees, Loop has a free tier and strong portal upsells, Recharge is widely used with upsell and bundle tools, and Skio targets larger brands with build-a-box and AI upsells.
What is the best free subscription app for Shopify?
Shopify Subscriptions is free with no plan limit, but covers only the basics. Among apps with more features, Appstle is free up to $500 a month in subscription revenue and includes prepaid plans, Loop is free up to 50 active subscriptions, and Seal is free up to 50 subscriptions with tiered discounts and no transaction fees.
Is Shopify's own subscription app good enough?
Shopify Subscriptions is free and covers subscribe-and-save, skip, pause, and cancel. Its listing doesn't mention upsells, bundles, or prepaid plans, so stores that want those usually need a third-party app.
Which subscription apps support prepaid plans?
Appstle includes prepaid subscriptions on its free plan, Loop lists flexible prepaid subscriptions on Pro, and Recharge describes prepaid plans on its site.
How do I upsell existing subscribers on Shopify?
Use your subscription app's portal and email tools to offer one-time add-ons to the next delivery. Skio, Loop, Appstle, and Recharge all list ways to add items to upcoming orders.
Can I use bundles with subscriptions on Shopify?
Shopify's native Bundles app isn't compatible with subscriptions. Several subscription apps, including Appstle, Loop, Skio, and Recharge, offer their own build-a-box or bundle features.
Judge the subscription by what comes after the first order
A subscription app earns its place when customers spend more over time, not when the first order gets bigger. Pick one whose upsell, prepaid, and cancellation tools match how your customers buy, and measure revenue per visitor and repeat revenue together.
