HiveSense vs. Shopify CRO Agencies: When an Audit Tool Is Enough and When to Hire
An honest comparison of HiveSense and Shopify CRO agencies such as The Good, SplitBase, Speero, and Blend Commerce: what each does, who each is for, and the traffic and revenue thresholds agencies publish.

Key Signal
Tool vs. retainer
The posts in this archive are written to help Shopify teams identify what is weakening buying momentum, what is suppressing AOV, and what deserves action first.
Disclosure: HiveSense is our product, and it's built by Thought Bulb, the Shopify studio we're part of. We've tried to be fair to the agencies below. Everything we say about them comes from their own websites as of October 21, 2026, and we link to each one.
A CRO audit tool and a CRO agency both promise to find what's costing you conversions, but they do different jobs. HiveSense reviews your store's public pages and gives you a prioritized list of problems and fixes. A CRO agency runs research, builds and tests changes, and usually works with you for months. The right choice depends mostly on your traffic, your revenue, and whether you have people to make the changes.
Quick answer
| If you... | Start with |
|---|---|
| Want a fast read on what's wrong before spending on anything else | An audit tool like HiveSense |
| Have under the traffic agencies say testing needs | An audit, then fix the clear problems directly |
| Have a developer or agency who can implement fixes | An audit, handed to them as a brief |
| Do $10M+ a year and enough traffic for regular A/B tests | A CRO agency with a testing program |
| Need user research, analytics work, and experiments run for you | A CRO agency |
| Are an agency pitching a Shopify client | HiveSense's white-label reports |
What HiveSense does, and what it doesn't
HiveSense audits the public pages of a store in a real browser, so content injected by JavaScript is included. It reports conversion blockers, AOV opportunities, checkout friction, and revenue leaks, ranked by likely impact. It's built around Shopify and also works on other public storefronts such as WooCommerce, Magento, and BigCommerce.
HiveSense analyzes public HTML and says it doesn't store customer personal data. That keeps setup simple, and it's also a limit: HiveSense can't see your analytics, run A/B tests, interview your customers, or build the fixes. It tells you what to change and why.
Pricing on hivesense.co/price.md as of today:

| Starter | $41/month (intro price, list $59) | 3 full reports a month, 1 site |
| Professional | $69/month (intro price, list $99) | 10 full reports a month, 5 sites, white-label PDFs |
| Power Pack | $153 one-time (intro price, list $219) | 300 extra credits for subscribers |
You can see what a report looks like in the sample report.
What a CRO agency does
A CRO agency usually combines research (analytics, heatmaps, user testing, surveys), a test roadmap, design and development of variants, and A/B testing over months. The good ones also tell you when not to test. Here is how several established agencies describe themselves on their own sites.
| Agency | What it focuses on | Who it says it's for | Pricing published? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Good | Research-led optimization programs (UX research, analytics, A/B testing) | Ecommerce and SaaS brands | No |
| SplitBase | A/B testing, CRO, and conversion-focused redesigns; says it's a Shopify Plus partner | 8- and 9-figure DTC brands; two programs labeled for $10M+ brands | No |
| Prismfly | CRO, Shopify Plus development, design, lifecycle marketing | DTC brands | No (contact form budget options start at $75,000 to $100,000 a year) |
| Speero | Experimentation programs, research, analytics | Lists $50M+ annual revenue as its ideal client | No (contact form budget options of $5k+, $10k+, $20k+ a month) |
| Conversion | Experimentation programs across industries, including ecommerce | From startups to large brands, per its site | No |
| Blend Commerce | CRO built for Shopify brands: audit, implementation retainer, redesign, A/B testing | Shopify brands; pricing "depends on the size of your store and the depth of work required" | No |
| Growth Rock | Ecommerce A/B testing plus a Shopify development team | Sites doing $10M+ a year | No |
| Fuel Made | Shopify and Klaviyo agency with CRO audits and testing; Shopify Plus Partner | Shopify brands | No |
| Cro Metrics | Began in CRO, now a broader growth agency; says it has run 35,000+ experiments | Mid-market and enterprise | No |
Contact-form budget options aren't published prices, so treat them as a rough signal of the client size each agency expects.
The traffic question
A testing program only works if the store has enough traffic to reach a result. Two of these agencies say so directly:
- Blend Commerce says it "typically recommends a minimum of 50,000 monthly sessions" for A/B testing, with tests usually running two to four weeks, and adds that CRO is still viable below that level.
- Conversion's Clutch profile states that about 100,000 visitors a month is needed for trustworthy A/B tests.
Our own sample-size math points the same way. At a 2.5% conversion rate, detecting a 20% lift needs about 15,600 visitors per variant (see how much traffic you need to A/B test on Shopify). Below these levels, an agency can still help with research and implementation, but you'll be paying for testing capacity you can't use yet.
Cost: what we can and can't say
None of the agencies above publishes a price on its site. The contact forms give a sense of scale, with Prismfly's budget options starting at $75,000 to $100,000 a year and Speero's at $5,000 a month and up. You'll find plenty of "CRO agency cost" ranges online, but most are written by agencies or software vendors and we couldn't verify the data behind them, so we're not repeating them here.
HiveSense costs $41 to $69 a month at current intro prices. That isn't a like-for-like comparison, because the agency is doing far more work. The useful question is what you need right now.
When HiveSense is the better first step
- You want a prioritized list of problems before deciding whether to hire anyone.
- Your traffic is below what agencies say testing needs.
- You have a developer, freelancer, or agency who can implement fixes, and you need a clear brief.
- You're preparing for a peak period and need to know what to fix first. Our BFCM 2026 guide covers the timeline.
- You're an agency and want a client-ready audit for pre-sales (see why agencies win more retainers with an audit first).
When a CRO agency is the better choice
- You do eight figures or more and have the traffic for regular experiments.
- You need customer research, analytics fixes, and test design done for you.
- You want someone accountable for a testing roadmap over months, not a one-off list.
- Your team doesn't have the time or skills to build and QA test variants.
Using both
You can also use both. Running an audit first gives you an independent view of the store before you talk to agencies, which makes their proposals easier to compare. If you already work with an agency, an audit can serve as a second opinion on priorities between test cycles.
If you need the fixes built, Thought Bulb, the studio behind HiveSense, offers a product page CRO sprint from $1,500 and fractional development at $100 an hour, per thoughtbulb.dev. We mention it because HiveSense users often ask who can build the fixes. Any of the agencies above, or a good Shopify developer, can implement an audit's findings. Our Shopify development agencies list has more options.
How to evaluate a CRO agency
- Ask what traffic they need to run tests, and what they do below it.
- Ask for case studies with the test method, sample size, and duration, not only the lift.
- Ask who implements the variants and who owns QA.
- Ask how they prioritize, and ask to see a sample roadmap.
- Ask what happens when a test doesn't win. Most don't: Optimizely's analysis of 173,000 experiments found that 12% won on their primary metric.
- Check whether they've worked on Shopify specifically, and on stores at your size.
FAQ: HiveSense vs. CRO agencies
Is HiveSense a replacement for a CRO agency?
Not fully. HiveSense audits your public storefront and gives you prioritized findings and fixes. A CRO agency also runs research, builds variants, and A/B tests changes over months. HiveSense is a cheaper first step, and it works well as a brief for whoever implements the fixes.
How much does a Shopify CRO agency cost?
The agencies we reviewed don't publish prices. Contact-form budget options suggest established agencies expect five- to six-figure annual budgets; Prismfly's options start at $75,000 to $100,000 a year and Speero's at $5,000 a month and up.
How much traffic do I need before hiring a CRO agency for A/B testing?
Blend Commerce typically recommends at least 50,000 monthly sessions for A/B testing, and Conversion's Clutch profile cites about 100,000 visitors a month. Below that, focus on research and fixing clear problems.
What does HiveSense cost?
As of October 2026, Starter is $41 a month (intro price, list $59) for three reports, and Professional is $69 a month (intro price, list $99) for ten reports and white-label PDFs.
Does HiveSense need access to my Shopify store?
HiveSense audits your store's public pages in a real browser and says it doesn't store customer personal data. Because it works from public pages, it can't see your analytics or run tests.
Which CRO agencies specialize in Shopify?
Of the agencies we reviewed, Blend Commerce says its service is built specifically for Shopify brands, Fuel Made is a Shopify and Klaviyo agency and Shopify Plus Partner, and SplitBase says it's a Shopify Plus partner. Others work across platforms.
Pick the tool that matches the stage
If you're not sure what's wrong, or you don't have the traffic to test, start with an audit and fix what it finds. If you have the traffic, budget, and appetite for months of structured experiments, hire an agency, ideally after an audit gives you a baseline. Run a HiveSense audit to see the findings for your store.
